There are several free campsites around Lake Tahoe, NV or CA/NV border, and here are a few options:


Luther Pass Campground: This free campground is located on the south side of the Lake Tahoe basin, about 10 miles from South Lake Tahoe. It has 11 sites and is first-come, first-served. To get there, take Highway 89 from South Lake Tahoe towards Luther Pass and look for the campground on the left.


Hope Valley Campground: This free campground is located on the east side of the Lake Tahoe basin, about 20 miles from South Lake Tahoe. It has 20 sites and is also first-come, first-served. To get there, take Highway 88 from South Lake Tahoe towards Hope Valley and look for the campground on the left.


Indian Creek Campground: This free campground is located on the west side of the Lake Tahoe basin, about 7 miles from Tahoe City. It has 10 sites and is also first-come, first-served. To get there, take Highway 89 from Tahoe City towards Emerald Bay and look for the campground on the right.


Silver Creek Campground: This free campground is located on the east side of the Lake Tahoe basin, about 25 miles from South Lake Tahoe. It has 5 sites and is also first-come, first-served. To get there, take Highway 88 from South Lake Tahoe towards Silver Lake and look for the campground on the left.


It's important to note that some of these campgrounds may have restrictions or seasonal closures, so it's always a good idea to check with the local ranger station for up-to-date information. Additionally, these campgrounds are rustic and may not have amenities such as water or toilets, so be prepared and bring plenty of water and a portable toilet if necessary.
